Note: Due to high volume of matching and new requirements for tutor participation, it may take our team up to a week to share tutor matches. We appreciate your patience and look forward to sharing great tutor matches with you soon!
Step 1: Register your child to confirm their eligibility.
It's not too late to register your child for The Steve Carter Tutoring Program for the 2026-27 program year. Not sure how? Scroll up to view the step-by-step directions.
Step 2: Complete Canopy Tutoring's Tutor Matching Form
Click the button below for support tracking your child's status and get matched with a tutor for free.
Our team will notify you of your child's current status and let you know if their status changes.
Step 3: Monitor Your Inbox
When our team has found a tutor match for your child, we'll email you their name, school, and teaching background. If you'd like to work with one of our tutors, you'll let us know you're ready to move forward and we'll add your child to your new tutor's Student Enrollment roster. Your child's tutor will reach out to you to schedule so you can get started.
If your child isn't currently eligible for the program, we encourage you to register again next year since the LDOE's criteria may change or your child may meet the eligibility criteria in the future. To stay updated on program updates, clock the button below to sign up for updates.
Q. My child is registered but I need help finding an approved tutor. What do I do?
A: We are here to help! Just fill out this form to let us know more about your tutoring preferences, location, and scheduling needs. Our Enrollment Coordinator will get back to you within 1-2 business days to guide you through the Tutor Matching process.
Q: How can I get more updates?
A. Click Here to Join Our Mailing List to receive program updates.
Q. I can’t find my child's tutor on the list/I don't know what Tutoring Provider to select.
A: You will not see your specific tutor on the list. You also do not need to select a Tutoring Provider. If you plan to work with a Canopy Tutoring tutor, you may select Canopy Tutoring.
If you made it to the tutor results, you have successfully registered!
Note: You are not required to use your child's stipend with a tutor or provider you listed during registration, so there is no stress if you change your mind later on!
Q. Do Steve Carter tutoring sessions cost money?
A: These sessions are at no cost to families. We carefully monitor students' stipends to ensure that they are not tutored past their allotment of $1,500. If for some reason a tutor accidentally tutored your child past their stipend, Canopy Tutoring will NEVER ask a family to cover the cost of a session.
Q. How much tutoring can my child receive with their stipend?
A. Registered students are eligible for a $1,500.00 tutoring stipend in Math and/or Literacy. The stipend works out to:
- 25 hours of one-on-one tutoring
or - 37 hours of small group tutoring
Q. How do I schedule tutoring?
A. You’ll work with your child’s tutor to create a schedule that best fits your family's needs. We suggest your child sees their tutor 1-2 times per week for maximum impact.
Q. Where are tutoring sessions held?
A. If your child’s tutor works at your child’s school, they’ll be able to meet at school for tutoring. Tutoring with The Steve Carter Tutoring Program must occur outside of schools hours, so many families prefer to have their child see their tutor right before school hours begin or immediately after dismissal.
Q. What if my child's tutor does not work at my child's school?
If the tutor does not work at your child's school, you may meet them at an agreed-upon location such as a local library, coffeeshop, or your home.
Q. What is a LASID? Where do I find it?
A: LASID numbers are student identification numbers. They’re unique 10-digit numbers and remain the same for students from year to year. You can ask your child’s school for your child(ren)'s LASID number(s) if you’re unsure.
You are now required to enter your child's LASID number to register your child. Please take care to enter it correctly as this unique, 10-digit number is how eligibility/registration status is determined.
Note: An accurate LASID number will be needed for each child/sibling you register.
Do you believe your child was marked ineligible by mistake? You may also contact the Louisiana Tutoring Initiative's office if you believe your child should be eligible. Call their office at 877-390-0556 from 7am-4pm Monday – Friday or send an email to contact@louisianatutoringinitiative.com.
Other reasons your child may not be eligible:
- They are a student outside of grades K through 12.
- They attend a non-public school.
- Their Literacy and Math proficiency is too high based on state assessment scores.
- They are not a Louisiana resident.
Q: Why is my child only eligible in one subject?
A: If your child is only eligible in one subject, this means their state assessment scores were too high in either Math or Literacy. If you believe this has been marked in error, we suggest you contact the Louisiana Tutoring Initiative's office to verify. You can call their office at 877-390-0556 from 7am-4pm Monday–Friday or you may send an email to contact@louisianatutoringinitiative.com.
Q: Is there a Waitlist for the program?
A: There is not currently a Waitlist so you should attempt to register your child for the program for thr 2026-27 program year if you haven't already. Once you register them, you'll be able to see straight away if your child is eligible for tutoring.
You will need your child's 10-digit LASID number to complete registration. If you're unsure of your child's LASID, ask your child's teacher or school. Take care to enter it correctly as this number is used to determine a student's status in the program.
Q: Why isn'y child eligible?
A: We unfortunately aren't able to see the individual student data that the LDOE uses to determine eligibility. If you have questions on your child's eligibility, you should reach out to their office directly using the contact information below.
Reach out to the Louisiana Tutoring Initiative.
You can call their office at 877-390-0556 from 7am-4pm Monday–Friday or send an email to contact@louisianatutoringinitiative.com.
Q: When/how will I found out if my child is invited off the Waitlist?
A: You will receive an email from The Louisiana Tutoring Initiative if and when your child is invited off the Waitlist. Let your tutor and/or our team know as soon as you receive this email so we may support you with next steps.
We predict students will be notified of being invited off the Waitlist in early January but will continue to update families via our Family Newsletter.

Family Testimonials
Family of a 1st Grader in Bogalusa
“My child really needed some extra help with English and since he’s been in the program his English grade went from a D to a B.”
Family of a 3rd Grader in Rapides Parish
Ms. Doyle sent me a picture of [my child] when he passed a level and the school posted it on their website. That was one of the biggest accomplishments for him this whole school year. I cried because I was so proud of him. He got to the point where he didn’t want to go to school because of his grades and was getting in trouble. She definitely deserves so much credit for helping him accomplish these hurdles he faces. He comes home from tutoring all smiles and shows me what he did!
Family of Multiple Students in Tangipahoa Parish
Ms. Callahan has been an incredible help to my children. From the very first session, it's clear she goes above and beyond to ensure my kids not only understand the material, but truly enjoy the learning process. She’s very patient, understanding, and always takes the time to explain things in a way that makes sense to them. My children's tutors have made such a positive impact on my children’s confidence and academic performance. I’m so grateful for the care and dedication their tutors bring to each session.
Family of an 8th Grader in East Baton Rouge Parish
Mr. Payne’s tutoring has had a profound impact on my kid's life, providing her with the opportunity to receive extra help after school. Previously, she was reluctant to ask for help in class due to fear of embarrassment or refusal. Now, she feels comfortable and confident in her work, and is eager to return to school and showcase her newfound knowledge to her teacher.
